Grab The Hymnal

You know what is one of the greatest tools for preacher?

I know you have heard me say it before…And I am on a music kick right now….

but I gotta say….

The Hymnal…

Yeah…I mean the hymnal…

I know what some of you are thinking…

“We don’t use the hymnal.”

or

“Hymnals are old school. We are attempting to reach a younger crowd.”

Yadda…

But hey I ain’t talking about using the hymnal for worship planning…

Although of course that is a good use for it…

I am specifically speaking of using the hymnal to aid you in your preaching specifically…

What do you mean Cox?

Well…what I mean is…

Let’s take a step back and think about the hymnal.

It is a repository of poetic theological reflection…

….

That has stood the test of time…

….

That speaks to and from the deepest reservoirs of human despair as well as hope…as well as joy…as well as sadness..etc…

A hymnal is the record of the songs sung by Christians for centuries to help them make it through….

So you use a commentary…

why don’t you use THIS commentary called a hymnal…

How you gonna preach on a subjct that the hymnal addresses and not even take that into account.

YES…

Preacher…Please make use of the commentary…

Read it…

And yes…Sing it…

And then when you ready to prepare to preach…

Go see the riches that it has for you…
