Biblical or Contemporary?

The Unashamed Workman teaches truth by quoting John Stott’s new book entitled The Living Church. Stott says in part:

But authentic Christian preaching is a bridge-building operation. It relates the text to the context in such a way as to be faithful to the biblical text and sensitive to the modern context. We must not sacrifice either to the other.

He notes that often conservatives are Biblical but not sensitive to the context. In addition liberals are often sensitive to context but not as Biblical. But Stott argues for a bridge between the two. This actually reminds me of the discussion that is going on at the Reformed Blacks of America Blog. And it is a reaffirmation of why we need preaching in the Black Preaching Tradition. Certainly it must be “Biblical,” but it has to be relevant.
